Trident Maple

Acer buergerianum

Description: The Trident Maple is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree. Typically reaching a height of 25 to 35 feet with a spread of 20 to 30 feet, the Trident Maple has a rounded branching form. It has a moderate growth rate and is easy to transplant, making it a versatile addition to various landscapes. The Trident Maple often grows as a multi-stemmed, low-branching tree, but with proper pruning, it can be shaped into a single-stemmed specimen.

Twig/Bark: The tree is known for its attractive exfoliating bark, which peels away to reveal a striking orange-brown inner layer, adding visual interest year-round.

Leaves: Its common name derives from the distinctive three-lobed shape of its leaves, which resemble a trident. In the fall, the foliage transitions to vibrant shades of orange and red, although some variability can occur, with some trees displaying yellow hues.

Flower/Fruit: The flower of a trident maple is small and yellowish-green, appearing in clusters in early spring, while the fruit is a double samara that matures in the fall, typically with a reddish color; both are considered inconspicuous compared to the tree’s distinctive leaves.

Habitat: It grows best in full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic soils, though it is highly adaptable, tolerating a wide range of soil types, moisture levels, and environmental conditions, including drought, wind, salt, and air pollution. Its compact size and manageable growth make it an excellent choice for use as a street tree, in smaller landscape settings, or even as a bonsai, where it is frequently cultivated for its aesthetic appeal.

All plants, as well as size, color and cultivar, will vary based upon availability.
