October Glory Red Maple

Acer rubrum

Description: The October Glory Red Maple is a striking female cultivar of the Red Maple, known for its impressive stature, reaching heights of up to 40 feet with a spread of approximately 35 feet. This tree features an oval-rounded form that adds elegance to any landscape.

Twig/Bark: Initially, the bark is gray and smooth, but it gradually darkens with age. As the tree matures, the bark develops deep furrows and rough ridges. It is important to note that the bark may crack due to significant fluctuations in temperature, which is a characteristic common in maple species.

Leaves: This cultivar boasts a broadly oval to round-headed crown adorned with glossy green leaves. The leaves are oval-shaped, measuring about 4 inches long and 3 inches wide, with 3 to 4 distinct lobes. As a deciduous species, it showcases vibrant seasonal changes, particularly in the fall when the foliage transforms into stunning shades of orange to red.

Flower/Fruit: In early spring, the tree produces attractive bright red flowers that emerge before the foliage, adding visual interest to the tree’s early appearance. These flowers give way to red-tinged samaras, which can grow up to 1 ½ inches long, providing further ornamental appeal.

Habitat: The October Glory Red Maple adapts well to a wide range of drainage conditions but demonstrates only moderate tolerance to drought. For optimal growth, it thrives in moist areas, making it an excellent addition to landscapes that can provide an adequate water supply. Its resilience and beauty make it a desirable choice for ornamental planting in various settings.
