Mary Nell Holly

Ilex ‘Mary Nell’

Description: ‘Mary Nell’ matures to a height of 20 to 25 feet and a spread of 50 feet in a pyramidal shape of very dense foliage. This hybrid thrives in partial shade but will show its best foliage quality and produce the most fruit in full sun. Its glossy, dark blue-green leaves create a lush, verdant appearance that adds year-round visual interest.

Twig/Bark: As a woody evergreen, ‘Mary Nell’ develops a strong and durable trunk with smooth, grayish bark when young, maturing to a more rugged texture with age. Its twigs are robust, supporting the plant’s dense and upright structure.

Leaves: The large, exceptionally glossy leaves are a standout feature of ‘Mary Nell’. They are dark blue-green, broad, and richly textured, with a tough, leathery feel. The foliage is particularly attractive and retains its color throughout the year, providing an evergreen presence that works well in formal and informal landscapes.

Flower/Fruit: This hybrid holly is known for producing an abundance of bright red berries, which stand out beautifully against the dark green foliage. The fruit is small, vibrant, and highly ornamental, adding a splash of color to the landscape in the fall and winter months. ‘Mary Nell’ may outproduce ‘Nellie Stevens’ in terms of berry yield, making it an excellent choice for those seeking both foliage and fruit.

Habitat: ‘Mary Nell’ is adaptable to a wide variety of soil conditions but prefers well-drained, moist soils for optimal growth. It is winter-hardy throughout the coastal and Piedmont regions of the southeastern United States, though it may struggle in more severe mountain climates. It is tolerant of partial shade, though it will produce better foliage and fruit in full sun. This hybrid holly is highly versatile and can be used as a hedge, foundation planting, or specimen tree. Its dense, columnar form makes it suitable for creating privacy screens, windbreaks, or focal points in the garden.

All plants, as well as size, color and cultivar, will vary based upon availability.
