Comice Pear Tree

Pyrus communis ‘Comice’

Description: The proper name of the Comice pear tree is Doyenné du Comice, first propagated near Angers, France, in the mid-1800s. The tree has a compact, upright growth habit, reaching a height and width of 12–18 feet. Its glossy green leaves add to its ornamental appeal, turning striking shades of red and yellow in the fall.

Flower/Fruit: Comice pears are large, with a greenish-yellow color when ripe. Some varieties display a red blush covering parts of the skin, and newer strains can be almost entirely red. Comice pears require a period of cold storage before they ripen fully to enhance their flavor and texture.

Habitat: These trees thrive in well-drained, moist, fertile soils with slightly acidic conditions. They need six to eight hours of sunlight per day and benefit from being planted in a warm location that is protected from frost.

Pollination: Comice pear trees are not self-pollinating and require another pear variety to bear fruit. Suitable pollinators include Bartlett, Bosc, D’Anjou, and Warren pear trees, which can help ensure a successful crop.

Harvest: The optimal time for harvesting Comice pears is from late September to early October. To check if a pear is ready for harvest, hold it horizontally and gently twist—if it detaches easily from the branch, it’s ready. Harvesting later results in a fuller flavor, while an earlier harvest allows for longer storage.

Flavor: Comice pears are widely considered to be among the sweetest and juiciest of all pears. Their flesh is buttery, sweet, tender, and aromatic, making them a favorite for eating fresh or using in gourmet dishes.
