Asian 20th Century Pear Tree

Pyrus pyrifolia ‘Nijisseiki’

Description: The 20th Century Asian pear tree is a large, ornamental tree known for its attractive seasonal changes. In the spring, it produces beautiful white flowers, and in the fall, its leaves turn a striking dark red. The fruit is apple-shaped, with yellow-green skin and a subtle hint of red, while its flesh is white and firm.

Flower/Fruit: The tree produces medium-sized, apple-shaped fruit with golden-yellow skin. The pears are known for their crisp texture and juicy, sweet flavor, making them a popular choice among pear varieties.

Habitat: This tree is well-suited to various climates, being both cold hardy and drought-resistant, and tolerates heat well. It requires 300–400 chill hours for optimal fruit production and should be protected when temperatures drop below -20°F. For best results, plant it in a location with at least six hours of direct sunlight per day and ensure the soil drains well.

Pollination: While the 20th Century Asian pear tree can self-pollinate, cross-pollination with another Asian pear variety is recommended for a larger, healthier fruit yield. For successful pollination, plant another pear tree within 50 feet of the 20th Century Asian pear tree.

Harvest: The fruit is typically ready for harvest in late August. Picking the fruit when it is firm, golden, and slightly fragrant ensures the best flavor and texture.

Flavor: The fruit has a mild, sweet, and juicy taste, often compared to European pears. Its crisp and firm texture is reminiscent of an apple, making it a refreshing and popular fruit to enjoy fresh.
