Robin Holly

Ilex x ‘Conin’

Description: Robin holly trees are evergreen shrubs with a pyramidal growth habit, known for their striking foliage and vibrant berries. These trees grow at a rate of 1.5 to 2 feet per year and can reach heights of 15 to 20 feet, with a spread of 12 to 15 feet. They can be pruned into a neat, cone-like shape to enhance their ornamental appeal.

Twig/Bark: The twigs are woody and durable, contributing to the tree’s hardiness and its ability to maintain a dense, upright form. The strong, sturdy branches make Robin holly trees ideal for use in hedges or privacy screens.

Leaves: The large, spiny leaves start as a striking maroon in the spring and mature to a glossy dark green. The seasonal color change adds year-round visual interest, with the rich, green leaves contrasting beautifully with the tree’s red berries.

Flower/Fruit: In the fall and winter, Robin holly trees become adorned with bright red berries. This evergreen selection is self-pollinating, ensuring a reliable fruit set each year.

Habitat: Robin holly trees thrive in full sun or partial shade, but in hot climates, they benefit from afternoon shade to avoid leaf scorch or drop. They prefer moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils but can adapt to a variety of soil types, including clay. These trees do best when sheltered from harsh winter winds, which can protect their foliage from damage.

All plants, as well as size, color and cultivar, will vary based upon availability.
